I picked up this rack recently because I had to transport my 15′ kayak on a highway at 70 mph for a couple of hours. Rack easily bolted to my existing factory crossbars on a 2005 Subaru Outback. The shape of the mounting blocks are made to adapt to nearly any factory, Thule or Yakima Cross Bars as far as I can tell. Once bolted on they feel very secure and I had no issues on my 4 hour trip there and back.

The fold down feature of the PRO was worth the price increase to me especially if you are planning on mounting on an SUV that has to fit in a garage. It has a large handle that you simply pull up and it allows the J bar to rotate up and down and lock in both positions. The other bonus is having the bow and stern racheting tie downs included. These are excellent and make it very quick and completely stable.

The only thing I need to get now is some locks to ensure that this great new rack doesn’t walk away since it is just 8 wing nuts holding them on. The price is high but there is enough solid engineering between the rack itself and the accessories included to definately recommend this rack.

I use this to hold a 72lbs, 16′ polypro tandem kayak and it keeps the boat secure and stable on top of my Explorer.

    Highly recommended

Purchased this fold-down kayak mount for our two 9′-6″ Wilderness Systems recreational kayaks, which mount on top of our 2008 Subaru Tribeca. I selected this model because of the nice and easy fold-down feature! The Thule Hull-A-Ports are mounted to Yakama cross bars. The Yakama cross bars were used because of the thick rubber coating and high strength. The coated bars keep from scratching things that I mount on top of the car when not using the kayaks, such as ladders and building materials. Have use the mounts for almost a year now and love them! I don’t use the front and rear tie-downs because the kayak cross-over straps seem to be secure enough and I didn’t want ropes rubbing against the vehicle painted surfaces. I traveled a whole summer with the kayaks attached to our Subaru with no problems. The straps and mounts stayed secure. I tied the excess strap material (after exiting the strap latches) to the mounts as an extra precaution.

I purchased the Thule brand even though there were other less expensive models. I am one that believes that you get what you pay for. Not so true in this case. This is an excellent product but I didn’t give it five stars because I didn’t think it was heavy duty enough to warrant five stars. If you don’t need the fold down feature that the Hull-a-Port Pro offers then I would recommend purchasing the less expensive “SportRack-Abr511″. These are sold online and at Gander Mountain. After close inspection, it appears that the “SportRack” model and the Thule model may be manufatured at the same entity. The only difference is that the “SportRack” model doesn’t have the ratcheting mechanism with the tie down ropes. The ratcheting mechanisms can be purchased separately. Overall I am satisfied with the Thule Hull-a-Port Pro but I believe that Thule products are a bit overpriced.

This rack does function but not nearly a good as the standard J-Rack. I traded for a smaller car with factory cross-bars. None of the eaily removable rack adapters would work properly. The fold-down feature allows me to garage the car but still load my kayaks quickly for a trip to a local lake. The lower arm is shorter and does not curve up as the standard J-Rack. The result is that it is easier for the kayaks to fall if not strapped quickly, especially if the is a lite breeze. The fall off occurs with 3 foot c-c as well a 2 foot; straight cross rail or curved.

A standard J-Rack on a trailer works great.

If I were to recommend it I would add qualifications. It might work with extrmely narrow kayaks not the 29 inch wide Pungo or others of similar with.
